It’s safe to say that COVID has changed the way we live, the way we interact with others, and the way we enjoy time with our family. What it hasn’t changed is the way we love, our passions, and our ability to truly enjoy ourselves. My family and I have always loved going out to local shows, and I told myself nothing was going to stop us from those experiences. So when I came across The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati and all the amazing shows, classes, and camps they have to offer, I was beyond excited. Their website was a breeze to navigate. The only trouble I had was deciding which show I wanted to watch with my family and which snacks to bring to the living room!
To keep my children entertained while still learning, I decided to check out TCT’s Pick-A-Path. We chose Harriet Tubman: Straight Up Outta’ the Underground. Pick-A-Path is exactly what it sounds like – a fun and interactive “choose your own adventure” where you direct the action while watching the show unfold. You get to be involved in the decision making – including all the twists and turns. And even though it always leads to the same outcome, it was so much fun watching my children fully engaged and soaking in a very important history lesson. They honestly had no idea they were learning!
TCT really does an absolutely amazing job bringing the past to the present. In this epic retelling, we got to uncover the truth about America’s 200-year-old struggle with slavery. And, we learned how Harriet Tubman, the most recognized conductor of the Underground Railroad, helped free over 300 slaves!
We watched it as a family and streamed it on our phone just to play along again and again. If you’re looking for fun and creative ways to spend quality time with your family, I would highly recommend The Children’s Theatre. Between the Pick-A-Path experiences, Broadway on Demand, and a few in-person shows, there’s truly something for everyone.
The particular show we chose was around 50 minutes and is recommended for ages 8+, but even my almost-six-year-old understood the story and how to play along. It’s a digitally streaming Pick-A-Path option from September 8, 2020 – June 30, 2021.
