Mother’s Day is just around the corner and maybe you’ve started daydreaming about a day without diaper changes, sleeping in, or a day at the spa. Or maybe that’s just me! And maybe you’ve started to think about what to get your mom, mother-in-law or mother figure in your life. I’m here to help you think beyond the breakfast in bed, pedicure and framed picture gifts (although these are all lovely ideas!) and get creative with Mother’s Day giving this year. Or you are welcome to just forward this list to your partner (wink, wink).
I pride myself each holiday and gift-giving situation to come up with something unique, meaningful and possibly even useful. I’ve gone the gift card/clothing route too, of course, but I try and pair it with something else thoughtful. Etsy has made my efforts much easier; you’d be amazed what you can find! My father-in-law loves to bike, so one Christmas I searched on Etsy for “bicycle gifts” and I found a clock made out of antique bike parts! Unique, meaningful and useful! Hopefully these ideas will get your creative juices flowing!
Meaningful Jewelry
Jewelry with children’s birthstones is always a great go-to idea, but I’ve found something even more personalized. I got this idea from my cousin who had a necklace made out of the signature of our grandmother. All you need is a picture of the handwriting and you can get a necklace or bracelet specially made! She got hers through the Jeweled Moments site, but I found this shop on Etsy as well that has great reviews. My kids are still too young, but when they start writing their names, I would love a necklace with their little handwriting as the feature!
Clothing with a Sense of Humor
Motherhood has to come with a sense of humor and there are so many lighthearted options in the clothing department these days. I personally love The Blue Envelope; their “Mama” shirts especially are so creative. They have options for Grandmas too! I’ve also dropped hints at this shirt, because I like to state the obvious ☺.
I love getting flowers but I hate when they die. And I’m also pretty picky about which kind I like, much to my husband’s dismay. But last year he upped his flower game with three hanging baskets for our front porch – two pinks and one blue to represent our daughter, our son and myself. It was a great gift that I got to enjoy daily as I looked out our front window. I also love an idea I came across recently of a flower subscription as a gift. I’ve heard good things about BloomsyBox, but there are many options out there. Because when you give flowers, a green thumb is not included, as I have proven many times!
This idea may not be very unique, but I think it’s a great gift. Especially if you go in with other family members, it can end up being affordable and you can benefit from it too! Who doesn’t love pictures of their kids and/or grandkids?!
I use this idea a lot with my own mom. Her Christmas gift this year ended up being coffee themed, an interest we happen to share. She loves the show “Fixer Upper” so I ordered her a mug from their store and then I found a mug with a quote on it that has a lot of personal meaning. If your mom (or you) loves to cook, maybe an apron with all of the grandkids’ names embroidered on it. The options are endless.
Again, this may not be the most unique suggestion, but it’s probably the best one of all. Time is a gift and spending it with your mom and/or with your kids is always meaningful. This year, I’m taking my mom out to dinner to our favorite restaurant and to see the movie Mother’s Day (thanks to Cincinnati Moms Blog!). We never spend time just the two of us, so this will be perfect.
Whether you give a gift, receive one or count Mother’s Day as a Hallmark holiday, it’s a time to set aside to celebrate mothers and all they do. We all know a smile, hug and an “I love you mommy” is the best gift of all and we are lucky enough to receive that every day. Happy Mother’s Day!
