We recently had a chance to try out a new kind of tablecloth – one that your kids are actually SUPPOSED to color on – and the timing could not have been more perfect as J’s 5th birthday party was coming up and I was manically trying to party-plan some activities and games to keep 15 children entertained. The Coloring Table is a product developed by a Kentucky momtrepreneur, and as many of the best ideas are, it’s pretty simple. It’s a specially-developed cloth printed with all kinds of fun food images that kids (or adults!) can color. When using crayons or washable markers (Crayola Ultra-Clean Washable markers are recommended), you can toss the cloth in the washing machine and the colors will wash out so that you can start all over with a clean slate. If desired, you can also use permanent markers and “set” the colors to preserve your artistic achievements. I initially thought it might be nice to use permanent markers and have the tablecloth be a keepsake from J’s party, but my kids were pretty adamant that they wanted to be able to wash the cloth out again to re-use so we stuck with washable markers.

DSC_0926As a party activity or just to keep a group happily occupied, The Coloring Table is a big win. With party set-up done and waiting for our guests to arrive, E and J jumped right in to get a head-start on coloring. As their friends arrived, they immediately wanted to sit down and start to color, so this was really a perfect activity for that first 15-20 minutes of a child’s birthday party when you’re waiting for everyone to get there and settle in. In using washable markers, we did notice that the colors are not quite as bright as when coloring on smooth paper, but still vibrant enough to be fun and true to the expected color. I saw from the product site that the fabric is entirely machine-washable and wrinkle-free, and we also learned following the requisite “party-foul” – it’s also amazingly waterproof – spilled liquids just brush right off. Having all the kids merrily coloring gave me time to greet guests and get everything set up for our party game. The kids also kept coming back to color more in between playing in the yard. We’ve washed the tablecloth to start fresh (note that I did use a bit of bleach to get it back to pristine white) and I can easily see The Coloring Table being part of our meal-time routine all summer.

CMB-table2I know a lot of moms like to do the research on where and how the products used for their kids are made, and The Coloring Table is one to feel good about there as well – the cloths are entirely American-made and part of the production takes place at a vocational plant that employs people with disabilities. Whether as a party or holiday activity, or just to keep little hands busy pre and post meal-time, a seat at The Coloring Table is loads of fun!
