4 Reasons Why I Love My Job

1

I’ve been working at a local grocery store chain in customer service for almost a year now. I’ve heard a couple of these phrases over time:

“Isn’t a career important to you?”

“You should put your job first.”

“Do you wish you made more money?”

Woah. Judge much? Let me tell you why I choose to do what I do.

  1. It allows me the flexibility.  I have an awesome boss man (you know who you are girl!). She helps and allows me to work around my daughter’s school schedule, family events, and church (which is SOOO important to me). Not many jobs would be this flexible. I am so very blessed with a great workplace that understands and adapts to my life.
  2. Helps me set boundaries. I’ve been at points in my life where I have focused on the wrong things. However, now, I’ve realized what is important to me in life. My family. My little girl and my husband are what matters. That is, and will always be my number 1 focus in my life. I’ve seen some people in my life put work first and family second. In my opinion, that’s not a good way to live.
  3. It keeps me humble. Working in customer service has its challenges, that’s for sure. Some days, enjoying the company of challenging people can be difficult. I’ve learned, through time, that everyone needs some light in their life. A simple act of kindness can completely turn someone’s day around. While my job isn’t glamorous, high paying, or ‘ important’- I feel like I can make a difference to those around me. I can be the light anywhere.
  4. I enjoy it. Yep, I do! I really do (well, most days). I enjoy talking to everyone, and the work atmosphere. It’s laid back the majority of the time. I work hard while I’m clocked in and do my job. When I clock out, my mind is focused on home.  I also have time to do the things I want to do! It’s a win-win.

I’m in no way trying to throw shade at the working moms out there. We all have our likes/dislikes. Everyone has a place where they fit in and feel at ease. I’m simply telling my story.

However, I will say that if you, AT ALL feel like its time to change your job- DO IT! Never be scared to switch your priorities. Life is way too short to be miserable and unhappy. It’s scary to make a change. It can feel like diving into unknown waters. But, when you do it…it can feel so refreshing. It was a renewal for me. I will never turn back to my old self.

I have a small 3 person family- my 6 year old little girl, Ellie and my husband Matt. I have 3 fur babies, my dog Jack-Jack ( Dachshund) and my two cats Harry and Mickey. I have battled infertility for a while, and I am willing to talk with any woman in the same battle. I work Full time as a teacher at a local daycare. I am a University of Cincinnati student. I'm finishing up my Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education! Never too late to go for a dream folks. In my free time, I enjoy: church, all things Disney, reading, writing and quiet times with my family. I'm a simple girl! It does not take very much to make me happy. You will see me at the grocery store with my messy bun and yoga pants on, that's for sure.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing your perspective Melissa! You are wise beyond your years and probably much less stressed than many people with “important “ jobs. Your choice to be true to your priorities and let go of concerns about what other people think is inspiring!
