What I Really Want to Tell My Mom Friends

0

Hi Mom Friend! Nice to meet you. Isn’t this a great park? Isn’t the playground super nice? So..where are you from?

Cool! I’ve been there before *conversation fades as I walk away backwards from you because my son is about to walk headfirst into a pole*

We moved here about two and a half years ago before that we lived in San Fra….*we’re interrupted by your child who is tugging your shirt and asking for a snack*

Oh, you want some good pediatrician recommendations? Well, we go to…*my child starts to have a tantrum for no reason*

Oh, new friend. I wish we had a good hour of uninterrupted time to talk. Our kids could contently play without risk of bodily injury and we both could engage in a substantial conversation where you could learn about me, I could learn about you, and we could share our hopes, aspirations, and maybe discuss politics (Lord willing we have the same views), heck, I’d even be happy to hear your different point of view. I mean at this point any adult conversation is a win.

You see, when I relocated here with my husband, I got pregnant very quickly. It’s been tough to make friends, and even more difficult since becoming a mother. My friendships prior to moving here were in my workplace where I forged strong and authentic connections with amazing people. Now they are far away.

The majority of my relationships here are mostly on an acquaintance basis. To quote Ariel from the Little Mermaid, “I want more!” I want to be a safe person for you to confide in. I want to hear about your life before your kids, and I want to hear about your life with them.

I want you to know that there is more to me than just being a stay at home mom. I want to share my crazy stories of working in television production for seven years. I want to recap last night’s episode of Real Housewives with you. I want your input and inspiration for this the new chapter of my life.

It would be nice for us to meet up one evening, sans kiddos, and I’m sure we can make that happen, but I know it’s a challenge with our busy conflicting schedules. Heck, it’s a miracle we’ve been able to meet up today.

So until that moment where it can just be the two of us, I’ll gladly take the brief moments of chatting between the chaos that is motherhood.
