Making Friends with Mommy Business Cards

0

I was listening to the radio one day when the little news snippet came on. The topic for this segment was about a new trend called “Mommy Business Cards.” I was intrigued, so I turned up the volume.

business cardsThey went ahead to explain that the new way to make mom friends is by handing out business cards with your information on it, such as name, email, the name and age of your children, and other social media information. When you meet someone on the playground, you simply hand them one of these cards and hope for the best!

My first thought was, “That’s kind of genius!” Followed quickly by, “Oh, but that could get messy.” Here’s my pros and cons list for these mommy business cards:

Pros

-It is an easy way to give all the important information you need to a new potential friend.

-People forget names, especially your kids, all the time. This helps them to remember exactly who you and your children are without apologetically asking over and over.

-Talk about a conversation starter!

-It can show your personality. Designing a business card that shows off who you are is a great way to let other people see your personal style.

-This is much better than standing there on your phone asking to add the person to Facebook. It also takes the pressure off of them feeling like they have to accept your friend request. You won’t be standing there right in front of them waiting to accept.

Cons

-Let’s be honest. It is a little awkward. Most people probably haven’t heard of this, so it’s going to take some explaining to someone about what they are.

-All of your information is out there for whoever has the card to see. Let’s say they drop it accidentally on the playground and someone else picks it up. That unintended person now has your contact info as well at your children’s personal details. It makes the perfect situation for unwanted stalking.

-It might be perceived as too bold or straightforward. It’s not exactly “organic” feeling when you have one of these handed to you. Some might see it as off-putting and whatever connection you just had has been broken.

The jury is still out on whether I’ll get some of these or not. I see both sides, but my hesitations at the moment outweigh the benefits. Have you ever been given one of these? Do you have some of your own? I’d love to hear about your thoughts or experiences!

I am a born and raised Cincinnatian, and I love this city and everything it has to offer. I'm married to my wonderful husband, Joe, and our daughter is a spunky, opinionated toddler named Rozlyn. I was raised a West Sider, but moved northeast shortly before marriage. My husband teases that West Side roots run deep, and I cannot go anywhere without seeing someone I know! I love exploring the city with my little family. Some of the most fun we have had together is when we just get up and see where the day takes us. I am embracing my current role as a SAHM and constantly learning as I go!
