Get out your walking shoes and your huge vinyl bag because you’ll want to attend one of Indiana’s most popular festival. Canal Days originated over 40 years ago in the autumn of the year following the harvest—farmers and traders gathered in towns to sell and trade the fruits of their labor. Today, this tradition continues with Canal Days when thousands of people flock to Metamora. Along with over 70 shops and eateries found in Metamora, you’ll see hundreds of outside vendors and artists selling antiques, crafts, collectibles and flea market merchandise. Enjoy wandering around looking at all the unique merchandise available and enjoy the special festival eats and treats.

In awe with the beauty of the night sky? Have questions about the Universe? This is where you can get the answers. Astronomy Fridays include short presentations on a wide variety of topics and plenty of time for your astro questions. Tour of the Cincinnati Observatory, which as a National Historic Landmark played an important role in the history of Cincinnati and our nation. Once dark, we will view the Moon, planets and deep space treasures through the historic 1845 telescope. (The program is held rain or shine; telescope viewing if clear skies). The topics and the night sky change week-to-week/month-to-month so you can visit often to hear and see something new.

Gold Star Chilifest

The Gold Star ChiliFest will be held at the Cincinnati Fire Museum and its adjacent lots on Plum and Court streets. The event and Museum admission are free to attend. Planned activities include more than 20 games for children and adults alike, firefighter demonstrations, the popular touch-a-truck area, photos with local firefighters, antique fire trucks and a smokehouse. Live music and ten food trucks, including the Gold Star ChiliMobile, will sell delicious dishes, including at least one chili dish.

The Hueston Woods Apple Butter Festival provides a vignette of 19th century farm life and features continual creation of apple butter in the pioneer fashion throughout the event. A great family activity conveniently located for Butler & Preble County residents. In addition to apple butter sales, a wide variety of apples, cider, pumpkins and gourds can be purchased on the grounds. Tours are conducted through the Doty homestead and the barn, both of mid 1980’s vintage and exhibiting a broad display of museum artifacts. Each year demonstrations of pioneer crafts are featured along with a theme program.  

Proceeds are directed to the historic preservation goals of the Association.

Take a hayride together to visit our Farmyard Friends at the petting zoo or roasts s’mores at the Yogi Bear Campsite! There’s something for everyone, so gather your pumpkins, jump in the car, and get ready for a day of fall family fun.


Baseball at the Observatory

We’re combining two first for this event – The country’s first public Observatory and the country’s first baseball team: The Cincinnati Red Stockings!

The Observatory will be the site of a Cincinnati Red Stockings baseball game! Choose a side to cheer on as the Red Stockings take on the Cincinnati Buckeyes in the field to the left of the Observatory. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch to make an afternoon of it!

After the game, take pictures with the players and then enjoy a tour of the Observatory and do some solar viewing, weather permitting.

Theatreworks’ production of Charlotte’s Web is based on E.B. White’s loving story of the friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a little gray spider named Charlotte. Charlotte, a fine writer and true friend, hits on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman — she will create a “miracle.” Spinning the words “Some Pig” in her web, Charlotte weaves a solution which not only makes Wilbur a prize pig, but ensures his place on the farm forever. We think this garden workshop makes for a perfect afternoon with friends or a great “Mommy and Me” outing with your kiddos. Gardening has tons of educational components to it, plus, it’s a relaxing and fun way to spend your time. We love the simplicity of these “make & take” workshops because not only do you get to leave with something pretty but for those who were not blessed with a green thumb, you get to utilized the experts at the garden center to help you create the perfect fairy masterpiece. The fact that this one has a spooky theme is just the pumpkin spiced icing on the cake to us!

From kings to kids, rainforests to candy wrappers, experience the global journey of everyone’s favorite sweet treat.
Chocolate hasn’t always been a bar. It hasn’t always been widely available. It hasn’t even always been sweet. Chocolate: The Exhibition tracks the rich history of the cacao bean, from its beginning as a royal — even divine — Mayan drink to its current role as a romantic gesture, guilty pleasure and global commodity. Follow the history of chocolate culture and science from the 10th century rainforest to the modern-day corner store. Few food items are both so historically and gastronomically (deliciously?) rich. Vivid environments and imagery, over a hundred exhibited objects and the tantalizing scent of chocolate await to tell this treat’s amazing history.

I am a native Cincinnatian, born and raised on the West Side and currently settled across the river in Northern Kentucky. I’m a former Highlander, Bearcat, Falcon, and Fulbright Scholar. My greatest challenge hitherto is the one I love the most: being a Mom to an energetic eight-year-old boy.
