Fall has arrived, and so has your guide to family-friendly events for October in Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky! It’s time to spend time celebrating all the activities that come along with the season.

Neltner’s Farm Fall Festival

At Neltner’s Farm, autumn is the time for harvest and celebration, and we invite your family to join ours for the annual pumpkin patch. There’s something for every member of your family: horse-drawn wagon rides, model train display, an expansive corn maze, our pick-your-own pumpkin patch, petting zoo, pony rides, homemade food and ice cream, farm shop, seasonal apples, and a barrel train!

A Halloween favorite is returning to Big Bone this season! Haunted Mini Golf will be offered every weekend in October starting on October 1st. More than 30 food vendors, petting zoo, pony rides, goat milking, working herd dogs, country, gospel and bluegrass music, clogging and square dancing. Demonstrations include sheep shearing; weaving and spinning; knitting; blacksmithing; leather works; corn grinding; sorghum, candle, broom, pottery and jewelry making; homemade apple butter, stone carving, quilting and more.

So much fun for everyone! Live music, hayrides, pumpkins, craft vendors, food trucks, corn maze, sunflower maze, meet the farm animals, Farm Fun Education Station, mule drawn carriage rides, High Grain Beer Garden and Cut Your Own sunflowers ($1 per stem).

Sunflower Festival is rain or shine, with the exception of dangerous weather. We reserve the right to cancel or close early if there is inclement weather.

Oxford Apple Butter Festival

The Hueston Woods Apple Butter Festival provides a vignette of 19th century farm life and features continual creation of apple butter in the pioneer fashion throughout the event. A great family activity conveniently located for Butler & Preble County residents. In addition to apple butter sales, a wide variety of apples, cider, pumpkins and gourds can be purchased on the grounds. Tours are conducted through the Doty homestead and the barn, both of mid 1980’s vintage and exhibiting a broad display of museum artifacts. Each year demonstrations of pioneer crafts are featured along with a theme program.  

Proceeds are directed to the historic preservation goals of the Association.

Art Play Hike: Fleischmann Gardens

Art Play Hike is an outdoor series in partnership with the Cincinnati Parks. Join us this month as we explore Fleischmann Gardens, take part in hands-on art making and try out some kid-friendly yoga poses.

Come explore the great outdoors with your little one. Dress accordingly, the entire program takes place outside. During the program masks are recommended for participants 4 and up. This program is designed for children ages 2-7 and their parent or caregiver.

The City Flea is Cincinnati’s original curated, urban flea market that takes place once a month at Washington Park and various other locations throughout the year. Since its conception in 2011, The Flea has seen dozens of vendors grow from hobby to full-time business and it is with much pride that we consider ourselves not only a monthly market, but a small business incubator, community organization, and city advocate. The Flea is a place to keep your dollars local, support small business and experience YOUR city in a unique and engaging way. Our vendors range from vintage dealers to artisan pizza makers to plant studios. We have something for everyone.

Thursday Art Play with the Contemporary Arts Center

Join us Thursday mornings for creative playtime at Washington Park’s Porch. This family program uses hands-on art making activities and yoga to excite and educate our youngest visitors. Stop by Washington Park to join in on the fun! Art Play is designed for children ages 3-8 and their parents or caregivers, older and younger siblings are welcome.

October 14: Camp Out– Let’s embrace Fall with a camp out themed Art Play. We’ll pitch a tent on the porch, create a night sky collage, paint with marshmallows and make a star meditation bottle.

October 21: Tinker Trays– Sometimes experimenting is the best part about art. It’s fun to make, explore, fail and try again. Pick up a tinker tray and get to work creating collages, building sculptures and creating with repurposed supplies.

We hope to restart a socially distanced in-person baby tour program in 2022, depending on COVID-19 conditions. Until then, join our baby tour mailing list to stay connected to the Cincinnati Art Museum. Emails will be sent out on the third Friday of each month.

Each email will contain a video demonstration or link to a baby-safe art-making activity to do at home, as well as a themed self-guided scavenger hunt that parents can be printed at home and used in the galleries.

Join us for a socially distanced version of the Cincinnati Art Museum program for families with children who have developmental disabilities. Sensory Saturday will continue to begin before public hours, so families can enjoy a less crowded environment if they wish to do so.

As families enter, they will receive a map that designates galleries with learning centers with instructions on the back. Each family or child will borrow a bag with hands on materials, using it to engage with art in the galleries. When visitors are finished with the supplies, they return the bags to a bin marked “used” materials.

Cincinnati Asian Arts Festival 2021 Virtual Event

The Cincinnati Art Museum is collaborating with local Asian community groups to jointly present the Cincinnati Asian Arts Festival 2021. Due to the high levels of COVID-19 transmission in Hamilton County and the surrounding area, the event will be presented as a virtual event.

The festival will celebrate the theme “Inclusion, Diversity, and Life” with the hopes of building a more vibrant, prosperous community through the power of art. Composed of two parts, Hello Cincinnati and the East Meets West Concert, this free one-hour event will begin streaming at 3 p.m. on October 24, 2021 from the museum’s website.
