Yard sale season is upon us again! If you’ve ever been to one, I’m sure you’ve seen the difference between a good one and a bad one. Here are some tips to have a successful yard sale.
Advertise, advertise, advertise!
Join local yard sale groups. Post to your social media. Put flyers or poster boards up in your neighborhood to get the word out. Do this at least one week in advance. Post pictures of some of your best items.
Price fairly.
People expect to get a bargain at a yard sale so be willing to wheel and deal with them. If you really want to get rid of your stuff, don’t price it too high. Do an online search of your items to see what the resale value is if you’re having trouble knowing what to charge. Also, price your items as you get them ready instead of waiting until you have everything together.
Set up a drink/snack stand if you have kids.
People love supporting kids and if they are out yard sale-ing and see a lemonade/snack/craft stand, they will likely buy something from the kids.
Have enough money to make change for people.
Including quarters if your items will be less than $1.
Save your grocery store bags.
Have them on hand in case people want one to put their items in.
Organize your items nicely.
People don’t want to dig through or squat down to look through a bunch of stuff. The presentation of your items matters!
Put popular and/or large items out in front.
This will help draw attention to your sale.
If you don’t already have one, set up a digital cash account (i.e. Venmo, Zelle, CashApp, etc).
This is especially nice for bigger ticket items like furniture.
Be honest about the condition of your items.
If something is broken or in poor condition, mention it and price it accordingly.
Have a backup plan in case of inclement weather.
Tents, inside of the garage, etc.
Plan on what to do with your unsold items.
There are a number of donation places that will pick your items up or you can drop them off to them. You can post them for free on social media platforms or Craigslist. You can pay a service to haul them away.
