A Day in the Life: My Kid is Sick

Disclosure: This post is part of a sponsored partnership with Hyland's 4 Kids, however we would not partner with a business we did not feel brought value to our readers. Opinions expressed by our writer are 100% authentic and she is only one of several moms on our team who regular use and enthusiastically endorse Hyland's 4 Kids Cough N' Cold.

It’s 4:30am and I am woken by the sound no parent wants to hear – coughing. And not just a little congested coughing, but the hardcore, we’re now all up for the day kind. I am instantly a mix of emotions – sadness for my son who obviously isn’t feeling well, annoyance that I have to deal with it, and hope that it doesn’t last too long… for all of our sake’s!

I knew it was coming. It’s fall, my kids have been in school for several weeks now and well, we live in Cincinnati. This trifecta is sure to cause a vicious cold at some point and it seems it has officially infiltrated our house. Our son was sick most of the fall and winter months of his first year, so now that he’s almost four, we are armed and ready.

I head in to his room (after I’ve started a BIG pot of coffee), and mentally prepare myself to get him better and just make it through the day. Thankfully, I have a tried and true tool box of resources to help me out.

hypandsBy 5am, he is snuggled on the couch with the following:

  • pillow
  • blanket
  • his favorite stuffed animal
  • Mickey on TV
  • and I’m on my second cup of coffee

img_8850He has all of classic cold symptoms – runny nose, bad cough, and a slight fever. At age one, I would’ve immediately called the doctor and begged for an answer to make him feel better. Three years and another child later, I now know better.

When he turned two, his doctor told me about the secret to helping my toddler overcome the everyday cold – Hyland’s 4 Kids Cold n’ Cough.

hylandsEver since then, I’ve kept our cabinet stocked with Hyland’s, both the daytime and nighttime versions.

Hyland’s 4 Kids Cold ‘n Cough Day and Night Combo Pack with Natural Grape Flavor provides natural relief of common cold symptoms in children including coughing, sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and nasal and chest congestion and occasional sleeplessness.*** It is designed to have multi-symptom relief without stimulant side effects. Its formula is designed for kids 2 years old and up and is alcohol free, sugar free and dye free. It contains no Aspirin, Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Pseudoephedrine or Dextromethorphan. Hyland’s developed this medicine to help kids get the rest they need to heal from colds and coughs. No sedatives and no next-morning grogginess.

***Disclaimer: Always consult your kid’s pediatrician before use. Always read and follow label directions. The uses for these products are based on traditional homeopathic practice. They have not been reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration.

My son is extremely picky and refuses pretty much ALL medicine. We’ve always had to play Houdini to get him to take anything… until Hyland’s. So by 5:30am, he’s had his first dose and the coughing starts to subside.

As motherhood goes, when my daughter wakes up, she also has a runny nose. It’s not terrible, but my intuition tells me…it’s coming. I’ve already cancelled any plans we had, so I give her some Cold n’ Cough as well and we snuggle in for a day of movies. Since Hyland’s is homeopathic, has natural ingredients, is free of artificial color and flavors and free of stimulant side effects, I don’t have to feel like I am pumping them full of things they don’t need.

After naps, both kids are feeling better and have even spent some quality time in time-out. By some miracle, I’m actually able to make dinner in peace and get all the way to bedtime until both kids start sliding downhill again. That’s the beauty of the combo pack – thank goodness for the nighttime version! By 8pm, both little ones are fast asleep and I’m not too far behind them.

Sick days are no fun, and this time of year, they are inevitable. When you have very young children, it can be so frustrating to understand their symptoms and then know how to treat them. We all know a runny nose can’t slow us down too much, or else we would be quarantined for most of the next few months! I plan on arming myself with Hyland’s 4 Kids Cold ’n Cough Day and Night Combo Pack with Natural Grape Flavor, so we can continue on, business and fun as usual!

And talk about great timing…you can pick up your own combo pack at Costco at the upcoming Costco Mom Hour on Friday, November 4th! Hyland’s 4 Kids Cold ’n Cough Day and Night Combo Pack with Natural Grape Flavor is exclusively available nationwide only at Costco now through February 2017.

Hyland’s and Costco both understand moms and their kids and are a match made in cold season heaven.

I am a native Cincinnatian and thanks to a lot of moving, I know this city pretty well. I grew up on the Westside, attended Walnut Hills High School, and then headed to Oxford for an education degree at Miami University. After a few years in Hyde Park, my husband and I are settled in Northern Kentucky for the time being. One of the great things about the Cincinnati area is the abundance of wonderful neighborhoods, schools and family friendly activities! My husband, Andrew, and I have a son, Aiden (2) and our baby girl, Audrey. We didn’t exactly plan all of the “A” names, but it allows us to keep our family nickname – the A-Team. I am an elementary school teacher, but am on a leave of absence right now to be home with my kids. My days are filled with entertaining my babies, taking way too many pictures on my phone and changing a lot of diapers. Thanks to recent open-heart surgery, I have an aortic valve that ticks (like a clock!), I have ornithophobia (Google it) and I broke my hip when I was 18 (I will never ice skate again). But, I do love photography on my “real” camera, pretending I’m a good enough chef to have my own cooking show and playing outside. I turned to writing/blogging in order to document my family’s journey to better health and as motivation to keep myself on track. You can read more about my personal journey at www.limkelife.blogspot.com. I look forward to sharing the adventure of motherhood with you!
